Queen Latifah

Dana Elaine Owens also known as Queen Latifah, an American artist and rapper. Her career as a musician actor, filmmaker and TV performer has won an impressive the distinction of two Screen Actors Guild Awards and two Image Awards. She also received an Grammy Award along with six additional Grammy nominations. Queen Latifah is a Newark New Jersey native. Her parents were Lancelot Sr. who was a policeman, as well as Rita teacher of Irvington High School. Her parents divorced around the age of 10. Latifah was born into the Baptist congregation and went to Catholic school in Newark New Jersey. In her early twenties, her cousin gave her the stage name Latifah which translates to delicate and kind in Arabic. Latifah, who was 5'10" tall power forward for the team at her high school, was always a tall girl. She performed the song "Home" from The Wiz in the course of a show at her highschool. Latifah started beatboxing for the rap group Ladies Fresh. Latifah was member of Flavor Unit - a group of rappers who were gathered around the producer, DJ Mark the 45 King. Mark James aka the 45 King, made a recording of Queen Latifah's Princess of the Posse rap. The song was sent to host Yo! MTV Raps Fab 5 Freddy. Dante Ross, an employee of Tommy Boy Music who heard the song, and then was signed by Latifah in 1988 for the release of her first single Wrath of My Madness.
